Composer: Martin Mackerras. Band: wondrous fair and friends. Performance at The Rialto Theatre, West End Brisbane. I’ve tagged this as classical because experimental gets away with being shit way too often and wf are not to be impugned by association with the avant garde.

Brisbane’s powerhouse scene of the early to middle 1990s meant a few bands fell between the cracks as far as public recognition went. Wondrous Fair were a generation too early with this kooky, retro pop. Most people were too busy with the grunge back in 1993, including yours truly.

This clip features footage from the legendary Target Building, home to many of Brisbane’s bands during the era. It was a sleaze den. My own band’s room was a former brothel. We had a toilet across the hall which doubled as a shooting gallery. Practice rooms were regularly broken into and it wasn’t unusual to hear screams in the middle of the night. Anyway, our next door neighbours were the lads from Powderfinger. They studiously put the hard work in while we drank cheap goon, partied to Pantera and thrashed out primitive power punk. The only time I really had anything to do with them was when they told us our room was on fire. My idea of an indoor camp fire wasn’t a popular move, I guess.
